Nuclear Armaments

A resolution to improve world security by boosting police and military budgets.

Category: International Security

Strength: Mild

Proposed by: Flibbleites

Description: REALIZING that UN members are outnumbered by non members by about 3 to 1,

ACKNOWLEDGEING the fact that UN resolutions only affect UN members,

NOTICING the fact that many non member nations are hostile towards UN members,

REALIZING that the UN members need to be able to defend themselves if attacked,

NOTICING that the UN has twice defeated resolutions attempting to ban UN members from possessing nuclear weapons,

1. DECLARES that UN members are allowed to possess nuclear weapons to defend themselves from hostile nations,

2. PRESERVES the right for individual nations to decide if they want to possess nuclear weapons.

As you may have seen, I have already set an AGAINST vote, because, well, I'm against, and I don't want the for-voters to get much of a gap between the againsts.

This resolution will make it much harder to limit nuclear weapons. They have no place in normal warfare, they pose a significant threat to all nations and to the environment.

I urge all my fellow IDU inhabitants to support me against this proposal.

I agree with Groot Gouda. Nuclear weapons are not a justified means of warfare. And neither is a "cold war" with countries threatening each other to use nuclear weapons.

Mikitivity is FIRMLY against this resolution. Weapons of mass destruction and the concept of mutually assured destruction is a waste of money and a risk to international peace.

Grosseschnauzer was appalled when we learned this was the resolution that had reached the floor.

We are firmly AGAINST this proposal.

Keeping the opinions on this one unanimous, Keeslandia opposes the resolution and has voted so.

While recognizing that war itself is a grizzly and terrible event, it is nonetheless inevitable that war will happen. The world will never be a place where ALL nations agree that war should be avoided at all costs. At best we can hope for is that the majority of nations will restrain from engaging in this activity unless absolutely necessary. The alliance of peace should disuade those more militant nations from aggression.

It is necessary to a free and sovereign nation to have security, be it through strong alliances, through a formiddible military, or through the potential for massive destructive force.

It is our belief that chemical and biological weapons should be banned because their purpose is not specifically strategic, but punitive. They also are limited in use so do not significantly increase the chances for victory.

Nuclear Arms do inflict wonton destruction with primarily collateral damage, yet create so much destruction that there is a great deal of strategic value.

Though there are grave tradeoffs to development of nuclear arms, their possession has insured peace. The people of Quentoni do not see this assurance of peace as a waste of money, even if it would be preferrable to divert funds into more humane and profitable pursuits.

With a respectable sobriety, we must vote for this resolution

I support the legal possession of nuclear weapons- they serve as a powerful deterrent for Adam Island- but I am open to the idea that there could be future resolutions that properly limit their use and production. If this resolution passes, it will simply be more difficult to pass those resolutions when they come up, because this resolution would have to be repealed first.

So I support Groot Gouda's vote AGAINST and Adam Island will vote the same.

We are abstaining although I am reminded of two relevant quotes that represent our conundrum.

George Orwell: "The quickest way to end a war is to loose it."

Albert Einstein: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

May you all have more clarity than I in your deliberations.
