Culinary Cookoff
#1

I have an idea for a neat mini-RP that some of us could participate in: a cooking contest, where chefs from different nations make different dishes that are compared by judges to determine a winner. It would be a great opportunity to show off some traditional dishes of our nations, develop some new characters, and have fun. Here's my idea for a premise:

This really rich Ceoranan guy (I'll think of a name later) is also an extremely talented chef. He has decided to use his fortune to establish a culinary school in his hometown (I'll think of that later, too).

In order to raise interest, and get a grant from the government, this guy wants to hold a cooking contest of contestants from around the IDU (no Ceoranans). Each nation will send a delegation of two members (?). The winning team gets a branch of the school in a city of their choice. (Told you this guy was insanely rich.)

Would there be any interest in participating?

I'm not sure how the schnauzerlands can limit themselves to one dish, We've islands in the cold north, a lot of shorelines and plains, forests and mountains, so cusine is varied as the climate.

You can make a bunch. I think it'll have multiple rounds, so we get more variety. How about a series of one-on-one competitions? If we get enough entries we could do a swiss-format tournament, or else a round-robin with fewer contestants.

Maybe each round would have a different theme - we could have a five-round tournament with the first round having an appetizer, the second having a side dish, the third having a vegetable entree, the fourth having a meat entree, and the fifth being a dessert?

Or perhaps we could do something like this: the Ceoranan guy makes a dish. The first team comes in and tries to make a dish to complement it. The second team then comes in, sees the first team's dish, and tries to make something to complement it. The third team comes in, sees the second team's dish, and tries to make something to complement that. This goes on until all the teams have participated. Or, that could be split into two: as one component of the competition, the teams are divided into two halves and do that with each other, and each side receives a group score that is added to their individual scores.

So many possibilities... Wink

I like the idea of a more straight forward competition. The goal being we need to sell others on our make-believe dish, which then becomes something of a cultural dish.

*After* the first time we do this, we'll each have something we can use in a more experimental type of competition.

Although Quodite cuisine is not the finest, we would be willing to provide chefs for this contest.

BT would like to participate in this, as well... I'll see to it that no deadly tnani is used as a spice.

Can't promise it, of course...

Okay. After some thinking, here's how it's going to work.

Each nation may send either one or two chefs. Each chef will submit one recipe (this doesn't have to actually be written OOCly. However, you will need to write a description of it [more detail=better], and a rating on a scale of 0-5, five being highest, for sweetness, saltiness, bitterness, and spiciness. Also give the dominant flavor). Chefs will be randomly given a day to cook. Each day will have its own board of tasters, each of which will have their own individual tastes. A score based on this, plus an element of randomness from the UN report to signify how well the chef played the dish, plus a regional vote on description quality, will determine the winner, who gets a nifty little cooking school to wikify.

I think that the Bears will probably send a chef along... although it would probably be best (from a PR point-of-view) if he doesn't use goldilocks-meat in his recipe... Wink
