Some fifteen years ago, the Dictatorship of the Unseen Master, in the region of the Dark Lands, began an invasion of bordering neutral territories in an attempt to expand its dominion. The leader of this nation, known only as the Unseen Master, was a quietly psychopathic despot. The Unseen Master had a reputation for brainwashing, genetic experimentation and total ruthlessness, and summarily executed all dissenters. His army were feared for their zombie-like state in battle, and all citizens who could fire a weapon were required to serve in times of war.
His invasion attempts were beaten back by a combined force from many of the other members of the Dark Lands. With his forces on the brink of implosion, his invasion attempt in tatters, his capital city under siege and his advisors and generals deserting, the Unseen Master finally snapped. He activated Protocol Omega - shorthand for total national devastation. The Unseen Master took the idea that if he couldn't have the nation, then no-one could. Protocol Omega was written into the coding of every orbital weapon and weapon of mass destruction in the Unseen Master's arsenal - it caused them to launch in a pre-programmed flight path to their targets inside the Unseen Master's lands, once given DNA authorisation by the leader.
The weapons vaporised most of the invading armies and destroyed all major cities in the territories of the Unseen Master. Nuclear fallout poisoned survivors and mutated crops. Famine gripped the nation, which was quickly taken over by a coalition of foreign forces. A biologically engineered plague, which had leapt from an Unseen Masterite bio-lab, swept the nation, killing millions before a cure was finally created. The final death toll of the Unseen Master's citizens was in excess of 1.2 billion people, civilians and military personnel. It came to be known as the Great Holocaust.
The roughly 5 million people of the Unseen Master who had survived these terrible tragedies came together and formed a small, armed republic. This republic was named Ferveo, from the Latin for "anger", and emigrated to the South Pacific, before eventually moving to the International Democratic Union with a population of 6 million. There, it espouses democratic, secular beliefs and sensible government, a world away from the psychotic dictatorship led by the late Unseen Master. The current leadership is interested in peace, but will not hesitate to defend its borders.
