Death Penalty

In the UN forum, I found this proposal:
Quote: Noting with deep concern that the death penalty has proven to be inherently racist and classist due to the fact that there is a greater chance of a convicted criminal being placed on death row if she or he is an ethnic/national minority, poor, or both,

Alarmed that the death penalty has recently been introduced or reintroduced in many nation states belonging to the UN,

Recalling UN Resolution #21, which states that ?all nations, irrespective of their mode of government must, according to the fundamental principles under which the UN was set up, must allow their citizens the right to fair trial, or face eviction from this institution?,

Deeply disturbed that many nations have been found to have executed a convicted criminal who was later found to be either completely innocent or convicted without a proper or prepared attorney, on faulty or incomplete evidence, or on circumstantial evidence and the testimonies of co-defendants,

Recalling UN Resolution #25, which states that ?In all actions concerning minors, whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts of law, administrative authorities or legislative bodies, the best interests of the minor shall be a primary consideration?,

Aware that minors have been tried as adults and been sentenced to the death penalty,

Noting that putting a minor to death is an action of a court of law that is hardly in the minor?s best interest,

Recalling Article 5 of The Universal Bill of Rights (UN Resolution #26), which states that ?All human beings must not be subjected to torture or to cruel or inhuman treatment or punishment?,

Affirming that the death penalty is said ?cruel or inhuman treatment or punishment,? as minors and mentally retarded victims have been executed in several UN member states,

Emphasizing that the death penalty has not been found to be a deterrent to violent crime (and, in fact, the opposite is the case),

Keeping in mind that the death penalty costs more than life in prison,

Reaffirming that the death penalty risks killing innocent people,

Recognizing that the death penalty is the greatest denial of civil liberties,

1. Declares accordingly that the death penalty will be made illegal in all UN member states for any reason whatsoever;

2. Applauds the nations which have already banned the use of the death penalty within their borders;

3. Solemnly affirms that any member state who refuses to comply with this resolution will have their membership in the United Nations revoked;

4. Calls upon all nations to place a trade embargo on any nation who endorses and/or uses the death penalty, regardless of their membership in the UN;

5. Requests that all member states voluntarily send reports on their progress in combating crime within their own borders, especially violent crimes.[/quote]
The Republic of Yuunli considers state-sponsored murder an outrageous violation of human rights. We therefore call for a UN-wide abolition of the death penalty.

What is your opinion about this?

I agree with you, in many cases Death Penalty isn't the right solution. And in a country where there isn't a Death penalty(like holland) there aren't more crimes, murder cases etc than in for example the U.S.A. where in some states criminals are convicted with the death penalty. So Does it prevent crimes, I don't think so. I know some murders are monsters, but killing them isn't the right solution.

This is my opinion about Death Penalty so I will support any wel written proposals that bans the death penalty.

I support proposals against the death penalty, but I'm sceptical whether the UN as a whole will vote for such a resolution.

I used to be firmly opposed to the death penaly as well. . .however, there are individuals who so destroy the very fabric of society, that it is clear they will never be rehabed and the gravity of their crime is so weighty as to forfeit any protections afforded by society. Therefore, in extremely limited cases, I now support the measure.

Don't get me wrong - I think W's Texas is sadistic and insane. To receive a death penalty in my world, you've had to commit mass or serial murder, with premediation. One wouldl have to be found guilty of the crimes, go through a sentancing hearing and then have multiple appeals available. No "fast fry" proposals permitted. . .this is a permanent, irrevokable punishment. However, for a handful of individuals in a lifetime, I do find in warrented in extreme cases.

My government's opinion, if a proposal is not a repeal of a IDU proposal, and if there are a number of IDU nations that like the proposal, even if it is a long-shot, I'd say endorse it. Smile

Ther Death Penalty should and must be abolsihed. In place of it, my nation would like to see that we have hard labor. Labors that won't get paid. It is good for the economic and those criminals will learn something from it. You can consider it as rehabilitation.

Death Penalty only makes those guys escape their punishment. Afterall everybody will die, soon or later so Death Penalty doesn't really help those victims. It is a cheap solution with no effect. I hope that our Union will support the idea of amending a resolution about hard labor which won't recieve any pay as punishment of crimes.

My nation is fully against the Death Penalty. Noticing that sometimes people are placed on Death Row for being a minority or ethnic group. The UN Resolution should be repealed.

I don't know if this is a good idea. There are definately problems with the death penalty, and I stand against it, but a UN wide resolution about it...?

Giving incentive to nations to ban the death penalty is good, but insisting they do? That likely won't fly. I know the former option is a cop-out, but I don't see any other way it will work.

Can't give an answer to the poll as drafted, as the approach Grosseschnauzer favors is that the death penalty should be available only in cases of terrorism, war crimes, crimes against humanity, or crimes against peacr that result in mass deaths.
