The Roucourtain Civil War is an ongoing multi-faction civil war in Roucourt sparked by the separation of several factions, mainly the People's and Nations Defense Squadron (PNDS). There are presently five main factions in the conflict: the established government of Roucourt led by Volodin Maximovich; the PNDS; a coalition of three democratic breakaway states (the Magnitovat Federation, the Democratic Republic of Lyudedovo, and the Republic of Neftelkovo); the Free Women's Republic; and the Anti-Rossorganain League. The Maximovich government is supported by the nations of Xiomera and Doatia.
Background[edit | edit source]
On May 13, 2023; Roucourtian General Secretary Svetlana Leclerc had an alleged mental breakdown due to alleged untreated catatonic schizophrenia[1]. On that day, she ordered the execution of the vast majority of the National Assembly, leading to the GSSG opening fire on Assembly members. Following this incident, conflicting orders were sent to multiple units of the nation's military, which was split into different overlapping divisions in order to prevent any one division challenging the General Secretary.
Timeline[edit | edit source]
On May 25, several divisions of the PNDS fired on other military divisions[2]. On May 28, 2023, the People's and Nations Defense Squadron announced they were separating from Roucourt[3], and immediately began rounding up members of the National People’s Militia and others deemed 'weak'. Their leader General Dubrevsky Yelisey stated that the territory held by the PNDS was now an independent country. Xiomera quickly announced a so-called "humanitarian intervention", sending military forces to the country[4].
The following day, the situation developed into a full-on civil war, with a number of other factions declaring themselves independent states, including three democratic groups: the Magnitovat Federation, a conservative democratic faction which has had resistance fighters for three decades; the Democratic Republic of Lyudedovo which desires a socialist democracy, and the Republic of Neftelkovo, a liberal-democratic faction which is friendly with Lyudedovo[5]. Also attempting to split from Roucourt were the Anti-Rossorganain League, a genocidal group; and the Free Women's Republic which desires Gynarchy.
With multiple nations calling for calm, including Sanctaria[6] and Lauchenoiria[7]; Slokais Islands announced their intention to patrol the waters south of Roucourt to "counter the Xiomeran presence"[8]. A day later, a ceasefire was reached thank to the government of Haesan which managed to briefly halt the fighting, allowing the League of IDU Nations to begin discussions on the situation[9]. Greater Acadia congratulated Haesan on the initiative[10].
However, on June 5, the ceasefire broke and fighting continued[11]. Two days later, Xiomera retaliated against the PNDS for shelling their camps[12]. On June 9, Volodin Maximovich was appointed General Secretary to replace Svetlana Leclerc[13].
On June 17, the Maximovich government accepted support from Doatia to negotiate a deal with the democratic factions, bypassing LIDUN[14]. In response, Xiomera announced that they would be withdrawing from Roucourt, however instead moved south to secure a number of platinum mines[15]. On June 22, Doatia began airstrikes against the PNDS and ARL[16][17]. The following day, Doatia announced they would be sending 100,000 troops to Roucourt[18].
Foreign involvement[edit | edit source]
Shortly after the outbreak of hostilities, Haesan successfully negotiated a ceasefire; however this soon broke. On the invitation of the established government, forces from Xiomera entered the country. Ships from Slokais Islands continue to patrol the waters to the south of the country. A deal between the democratic factions and the established government was negotiated by Doatia, prompting the Xiomerans to withdraw from the capital to the platinum mines southwards of there. Later, Doatia began air strikes against the PNDS and ARL and sent a number of troops to the nation, prompting concerns from numerous nations.
LIDUN discussion[edit | edit source]
Shortly after the outbreak of the conflict, the delegation from Lauchenoiria proposed to the League of IDU Nations Security Council that the body should discuss the situation and debate if any involvement was necessary. This discussion is ongoing.
