			In the 2024 Milintican elections, Neina Arana of the Milintican Communist Party won a surprise victory over the incumbent President Matōchmizalo and the long-dominant Milintican People's Party. Arana had previously been expelled from the MPP after political disagreements with the President. Upon her victory, Arana promptly announced her intent to withdraw Milintica from the [[Union of Caxcanan States]]. This announcement, along with suspicions among MPP followers that Arana had somehow stolen the election, led to a series of riots around the country. Arana seized on the unrest to declare martial law and impose a totalitarian crackdown. The MPP was banned, and many of its leaders (including the former President and Prime Minister) were jailed.

			The government of Milintica's former UCS ally, [[Huenya]], began to intervene in the country after MCP officials imprisoned two Huenyan diplomats who had been observing the elections. On October 10, 2024, Huenyan special forces extracted the two Huenyan diplomats by force from Milintica. This led to the prompt withdrawal of Milintica from the UCS by Arana, and by a severe deterioration of relations between the two nations.

			In April 2025, Mikaere Tahana, the Deputy Inspector General of Milintica's electoral commission, defected to Huenya. Tahana provided evidence to prove that Arana and the MCP had rigged the 2024 election results, conspiring with a group of elections officials, judges, and figures within the security forces. The revelation that Arana's government was illegitimate led to a rapid surge of unrest inside the country. In an attempt to unite the people behind her regime, Arana re-ignited a long simmering territorial dispute with [[Xiomera]] over the Aoatea (Chenalco) islands. The dispute came to a head when the Milinticans downed a Xiomeran surveillance plane and took its crew prisoner. In response, Xiomera launched a massive aerial and naval attack on the Milintican islands on November 11, 2025. The bulk of Milintica's navy and air force were destroyed within a few hours by overwhelming Xiomeran strikes.

			With a Xiomeran invasion and possible occupation of Milintica imminent, UCS forces led by Huenya stepped up their own intervention in the country. A covert raid by Huenyan and [[Eiria\|Eirian]] special forces helped free President Matōchmizalo from prison on November 20th, 2025. Matōchmizalo was declared the legitimate President a day later, as Tahana's evidence had shown he had actually won the 2024 election. On November 30th, 2025, a joint Huenyan-Milintican raid captured Neina Arana and several of her top advisors, bringing her regime to an end.

			The restored government of President Matōchmizalo negotiated an end to Xiomera's "punitive military operation" against Milintica on December 7, 2025. In talks led by diplomats from [[Haesan]], the Treaty of Yeocheon formally ended hostilities. Milintica was forced to make several concessions, including abandoning all future claims to the Aoatea (Chenalco) islands. Milintica was also forced to cede the Ngāmotu and Ōkarae islands to Xiomera.

			Neina Arana and other top Milintican leaders were found guilty of multiple crimes by a Milintican tribunal, colloquially known as the Milinticourt, on February 7, 2026. Arana was later found dead in her prison cell on March 9, 2026. The official report was that her death was due to a cardiac illness. However, speculation that Matōchmizalo, Huenya or Xiomera had assassinated the former leader would emerge among her former followers and those of the now-banned Milintican Communist Party.

All Milintican children are required to attend school at least up to Grade 12, and are granted a "Level 3 Diploma" (high school diploma) upon completion.

"Level 4" institutions are equivalent to the undergraduate level of college education in other countries. "Level 4" institutions also include trade and vocational schools. "Level 5" institutions constitute the post-graduate level of Milintican education. Higher education is not mandatory, but is free by law to any Milintican student who wishes to attend. Foreign students attending Milintican institutions are required to pay a tuition and boarding assessment (a nominal amount when compared to educational costs in other countries). Foreign students can also apply for scholarships, grants and stipends offered by the Milintican government.
