The '''Department of Education and Research''' (often referred to as '''DER''' or just the '''Department of Education'''), is the [[Sanctaria|Sanctarian]] governmental department responsible for education policy and oversight of curricula, the provision and support of scientific research within the nation, and management of the federal space programmes. It is equivalent to the education, science and research ministries of other countries. The department was created in 1974 as the Department of Education, with further duties added to the department by successive governments. The department is headquartered in 04 Government Square, in the government district of [[Sanctus]], giving rise to the department's nickname of 4GS.

The Department is led by the [[Secretary for Education and Research (Sanctaria)|Secretary for Education and Research]], who is nominated by the [[Chancellor of Sanctaria|Chancellor]], confirmed by the [[Sanctarian Senate|Senate]], and appointed by the [[President of Sanctaria|President]]. The Secretary is a member of the [[Government of Sanctaria|Cabinet]]. The current Secretary for Education and Research is [[Noah Cameron]] [[House of Deputies of Sanctaria|MP]].

==Organisation==
The Department of Education and Research is headed by the Secretary of the Department of Education and Research, also known as the Secretary for Education and Research. The Secretary is aided by the senior civil servant in charge of the department, the Director-General. The Department itself is then split into various divisions or directorates, with each division headed by other senior civil servants, Directors, who report to both the Director-General and the Secretary of State. This is mirrored in all other government departments, with the only political staff being the Secretary themselves, or any other politician appointed to aide them. Civil servants throughout the department report to their superiors, who eventually report to the Director-General, who is then answerable to the Secretary. The Secretary in turn reports back to the [[Government of Sanctaria|Cabinet]] and, indeed, the [[Sanctarian Federal Parliament|Parliament]].

The [[Sanctarian Space Agency]] is an independent agency under the auspices of the Department led by a [[Sanctarian Space Agency#Director|Director]] who reports to the Secretary directly.
