The nation also has a lower house with democratically elected representatives, called the House of Brods (''Brods'' being the ancient Gonhogian word for peasant or serf) however it has very little actual power. Recent reforms have granted the lower house more power such the ability to introduce laws into the House of Nobles, but any law that is introduced or drafted can be struck down by the upper house.

The First Empire of Gonhog commonly called Gonhog, is an authoritarian oligarchy in northeast Hespia. It is bordered on the south by [nation]Christos[/nation] and borders the Alyeskan Ocean to the north. With a population of around 56 million, it covers around 502,000 km squared. The First Empire is divided into 12 governed regions, each with a provincial capital and governor.

The First Empire of Gonhog intervenes in many international conflicts, usually to cause disorder in order to further Gonhog's goals or to just hamper nations it doesn't see eye to eye with. Most recently, Gonhog has involved itself in the Second Lauchenoirian Civil War. It sees other democratic nations, especially the superpower of [nation]Sanctaria[/nation] as imperialistic enemies.

The authoritarian state was established in 1979 after a fascist coup. The government has since used propaganda and censorship as weapons against its people, however many people support the fascist government anyways due to an increase in Gonhog's regional power and increase in economic productivity. Tourists and immigrants will find Gonhog to be a fairly developed, if restrictive, nation.

The origin of the nation name of "Gonhog" comes from the combination of two words: [i]hogia[/i] (meaning "land") and the name of the main bay on which Jaken City sits on, known as "Gonea Bay." This bay was a critical fishing and trading port for the first inhabitants of the area, and so the natives and foreigners alike began to call it "Gonhog," translated loosely to "Land of Gonea."

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Gonhog is as a "Gonhogian."

[b]Early Beginnings[/b]
The area that is present-day Gonhog was first inhabited by hunter-gatherers in around 11000 BC- some 2000 years before the invention of agriculture. Hunters found the seas plentiful with fish, large land mammals, and plentiful flora. With the invention of agriculture, settlements began to be placed down. The territory was divided into tribes and clans.

While hundreds of clans inhabited the area, three larger ones would eventually go on to unite these warring clans by around 2000 BC. The clans were descendants of some of the first settlers and boasted impressive populations for the time. These tribes were the Meredians, Normics, and Borviciis. While the Meredians traced back their cultural and physical roots from the west, the culturally similar Normics and Borviciis were originally from the south. The Meredians also arrived earlier to the region, around 500 years before their counterparts.

Wars between the tribes over hunting and farming grounds, family quarrels, or border disputes often pitted all three against each other, however the Normics and Borviciis frequently allied with each other. After a series of royal intermarrying, the Normics and Borviciis were eventually united as the Borvimic Kingdom under Berovim the Great in 951, and their similar cultures would slowly merge together. At this point, the Meredians were split into several clans, while the Borviciis had lost considerable territory to southern kingdoms. Berovim, now with the combined strength of the two clans, conquered the Meredians and went on to establish the First Empire of Borvimic. Berovim would continue to push south and west until his death in 898 BC.

[b]The Borvimic Empire and its Downfall[/b]
The Borvimic Empire would continue to exist and expand under the Berovimic dynasty, which lasted until 507 BC. It stretched as far south as the Great Gulf. The Berovimic Empire saw an expansive infrastructure develop and a boom in the arts and literature, especially under the "Enlightened Five," the first five emperors of the Empire that promoted the arts and culture. During the latter half of the Empire, greater autonomy was given to the local clans, which resulted in a fractured state. The Empire fell into disunity, and collapsed in 507 BC.

The First Empire of Gonhog is ruled by an authoritarian oligarchy, with the government based in the capital Jaken City. The president of Gonhog is technically elected by popular vote, however he is the only person on the ballot and the actual candidate is chosen by the upper house, the House of Nobles, which consists of 36 families chosen after the establishment of the First Empire. The nation also has a lower house with democratically elected representatives, called the House of Brods ([i]Brods[/I] being the ancient Gonhogian word for peasant or serf) however it has very little actual power. Recent reforms have granted the lower house more power such the ability to introduce laws into the House of Nobles, but any law that is introduced or drafted can be struck down by the upper house.

[b]Local, Provincial, and National Government Structure[/b]

The First Empire is divided into 12 provinces, each led by a governor approved by the president and chief advisor, and is further divided into 36 districts, 3 a province. Each district is headed by their representative in the House of Nobles. The districts are based off of the borders of ancient clans, of which the families (and representatives) are loosely descended from. The districts oversee their local territory and answer directly to the governor.

The Second Lauchenoirian Civil War is an ongoing conflict in [[Lauchenoiria]]. The conflict began after [[Suleman Chaher]] deposed Prime Minister [[Laura Moore]] in a coup d'état. Following this, the island of [[Aeluria]] issued a unilateral declaration of independence, which was not recognised by either of the other factions.

==Background==

Following 62 years of Communist rule after the [[First Lauchenoirian Civil War]], a [[Liberal Party of Lauchenoiria|Liberal]] government was elected, which led to a [[Lauchenoirian Capitalism Referendum, 2017|referendum on capitalism]] being held in August 2017, which was won by those favouring a transition to capitalism with 62.3% voting in favour.

In February 2018, following a riot by the [[Anarcho-Communist Collective of Lauchenoiria]] in Melissa City, Laura Moore's government accepted help from [[Skoden|Skodenian]] Peacekeepers after hostages were taken. This led to conspiracy theories that Laura Moore was working for the Skodenian government.

Suleman Chaher covertly gathered support for a vote-of-no-confidence in Laura Moore, which took place on the 9th May in a move Chaher's opponents have criticised as an illegal coup d'état due to irregularities in the voting procedure.

On 9th May 2018, the Federal Parliament of Lauchenoiria passed a vote-of-no-confidence in [[Laura Moore]] without giving advance warning of the vote taking place, a violation of parliamentary procedure and, some have argued, illegal in Lauchenoirian law. President [[Leanna Walker]] refused to recognise the government formed by [[Suleman Chaher]] after this took place, due to this perceived illegality. Following the refusal to recognise Chaher's government, Parliament began impeachment procedures on Walker. During this time, Walker remained in exile in [[Laeral]], fearing arrest if she returned to Lauchenoiria.

During this month, the island of [[Aeluria]] declared independence from the Federation of Lauchenoiria, a declaration of independence that was not recognised by either Suleman Chaher or Leanna Walker. The declaration of independence was recognised by [[Gnejs]] several days later, in an event some have characterised as unexpected. Most of the [[International Democratic Union|IDU]] have refused to recognise this declaration.

In early June, Leanna Walker was officially impeached by Parliament, and a warrant for her arrest issued. [[Laeral]] refused to extradite Walker. [[Keiran MacKenzie]] succeeded Walker as President. During this month, [[Gonhog]] and [[Kerlile]] both declared their support for Chaher's government, while [[Skoden]] and [[Laeral]] formed [[The Coalition to Liberate Lauchenoiria]], siding with Moore and the [[Lauchenoirian Resistance]]. The Resistance captured Annatown, which began a series of battles across the country as cities changed hands between pro- and anti-Chaher forces.

[[Kivasek]] recognised Aeluria's declaration of independence and sent volunteer forces to the island to assist in defending the territory against Lauchenoirian forces. This move was supported by [[Keitha Noguera]], First Minister of Aeluria, which surprised some as Noguera had previously been considered a pacifist. Towards the end of the month, the Lauchenoirian Navy began a blockade of the island preventing anyone from arriving, leaving or delivering supplies.

Several terrorist-style attacks took place over this time alongside conventional warfare, including a bomb in the Melissa City Police Department headquarters. Laeralian President [[Nicholas Brennan]] was also a victim of an assassination attempt by a Slokasian man claiming Chaher as his inspiration.

Suleman Chaher was the victim of an assassination attempt by Leanna Walker, initially surviving, but later dying following complications in surgery to treat his wounds. Following Chaher's death, Walker was executed. [[Charissa Clarke]] became the new Prime Minister of Lauchenoiria.

During this month, [[Libertas Omnium Maximus]], [[Slokais Islands]] and [[Aertemedia]] all joined the Coalition, which advanced north from Summersea, and by the end of the month, had captured territory covering most of Costeno and Ulinaria provinces. In response, Kerlile sent more troops to Lauchenoiria.

President Lucas Brown of Libertas Omnium Maximus was wounded by a car bomb during this time. It is unknown yet whether this is related to the war.

The Coalition continue to fight Gonhog in Ecanta Province. On the 7th August, the city of Usera, which had been in Resistance hands since the 16th June, was captured by Kerlile.

The Resistance captured Annatown, which began a series of battles across the country as cities changed hands between pro- and anti-Chaher forces.

Following this, the island of [[Aeluria]] issued a unilateral declaration of independence, which was not recognised by either of the other factions.

In February 2018, following a riot by the [[Anarcho-Communist Collective of Lauchenoiria]] in Melissa City, Laura Moore's government accepted help from [[Skoden|Skodenian]] Peacekeepers after hostages were taken. This led to conspiracy theories that Laura Moore was working for the Skodenian government.

Suleman Chaher covertly gathered support for a vote-of-no-confidence in Laura Moore, which took place on the 9th May in a move Chaher's opponents have criticised as an illegal coup d'état due to irregularities in the voting procedure.

During this month, [[Gonhog]] and [[Kerlile]] both declared their support for Chaher's government, while [[Skoden]] and [[Laeral]] formed [[The Coalition to Liberate Lauchenoiria]], siding with Moore and the [[Lauchenoirian Resistance]]. The Resistance captured Annatown, which began a series of battles across the country as cities changed hands between pro- and anti-Chaher forces.

[[Kivasek]] recognised Aeluria's declaration of independence and sent volunteer forces to the island to assist in defending the territory against Lauchenoirian forces. This move was supported by [[Keitha Noguera]], First Minister of Aeluria, which surprised some as Noguera had previously been considered a pacifist. Towards the end of the month, the Lauchenoirian Navy began a blockade of the island preventing anyone from arriving, leaving or delivering supplies.

Several terrorist-style attacks took place over this time alongside conventional warfare, including a bomb in the Melissa City Police Department headquarters. Laeralian President [[Nicholas Brennan]] was also a victim of an assassination attempt by a Slokasian man claiming Chaher as his inspiration.

*1st July - Suleman Chaher is shot by Leanna Walker and survives. Walker is imprisoned.

*12th July - Suleman Chaher is seen for the first time since the attempted assassination at a parade celebrating the 1952 revolution.

*20th July - The Resistance takes control of most of Ulinaria Province.
*21st July - Maximusian Special Forces capture the city of Carville from Gonhog.

*24th July - [[Aertemedia]] joins the war.
*25th July - Suleman Chaher succumbs to his wounds and dies.
*27th July - Leanna Walker is executed in an unknown location.
*30th July - [[Lucas L. Brown]], president of Libertas Omnium Maximus, is wounded by a car bomb.

Suleman Chaher was the victim of an assassination attempt by Leanna Walker, initially surviving, but later dying following complications in surgery to treat his wounds. Following Chaher's death, Walker was executed. [[Charissa Clarke]] became the new Prime Minister of Lauchenoiria.

During this month, [[Libertas Omnium Maximus]], [[Slokais Islands]] and [[Aertemedia]] all joined the Coalition, which advanced north from Summersea, and by the end of the month, had captured territory covering most of Costeno and Ulinaria provinces. In response, Kerlile sent more troops to Lauchenoiria.

President Lucas Brown of Libertas Omnium Maximus was wounded by a car bomb during this time. It is unknown yet whether this is related to the war.

===August===

*1st August - An international manhunt begins for Brown's would-be assassin.
*3rd August - Aeluria announces they have run out of supply of certain items, including cigarettes imported by Kivasek.
*4th August - Kivasekian volunteers open fire at a riot at a food distribution point on Aeluria, killing one and injuring 4 others.
*5th August - Government forces report the body of Foreign Secretary [[Rowan Martin]] has been found and accuse the Resistance of being behind the killing.
*7th August - Coalition forces engage Gonhogian forces in Ecanta Province; Kerlian forces take Usera from the Resistance.
*8th August - Lauchenoirian Resistance leader Sonja Viratnen-Alvarez is identified on Lauchenoirian state media as [[Jennifer Hale]], a Kerlian aristocrat; the husband of Aelurian First Minister [[Keitha Noguera]] is found dead on an Aelurian beach.
*9th August - [[Prime Minister of Sanctaria|Prime Minister Charlene Hendry]] of [[Sanctaria]] calls for a ceasefire in Lauchenoiria and begin peace negotiations in Haven.
*10th August - [[Laura Moore]], speaking on behalf of the Lauchenoirian Resistance, announces their willingness to enter peace talks.

Following Chaher and Walker's deaths, the war has continued as before. Aeluria remains blockaded and rationing on the island has increased. Kerlian reinforcements have arrived. The Coalition continue to fight Gonhog in Ecanta Province. On the 7th August, the city of Usera, which had been in Resistance hands since the 16th June, was captured by Kerlile.
