Hello all, I'm Henry Yeong, and welcome to HSN's coverage of the long-awaited 2024 IDU Baseball Classic! We're here live in Munseong, Namhae to cover the draw, and we have finally received confirmation of the 16 team slate, and a start time for the second iteration of this tournament! The Ministry of Culture is about to unveil the groups for this tournament, and we have a sterling team here to provide instant analysis and breakdown all the interesting matchups here. We have Alexandra Yoo here, who specializes in the Haesan national team and international events.
AY: Happy to be here, Henry!
HY: Also joining us is Manuel Enriquez, a long time player, coach, and official within the Slokaisian organization.
ME: I'm excited to see what kind of chaos the draw will cause!
HY: Haha, very well then! Last but not least, we have the former Laeral Crane, Zhuang Zhisheng.
ZZ: Thanks for having me! And I know this might not be the most popular here, but go Striking Cranes! (Makes striking crane hand gesture)
Yoo gives a death stare from across the table
HY: Uhh... (awkward pause) It looks like they're about to reveal Group A! Let's see who will be joining Haesan for matches in Suyang and Hanyeong!

Group A - Suyang/Hanyeong
Haesan (H)
Mallacaland
Elalia
Lao Sansong

HY: To my eyes, this looks like a group that's settled before it begins, but I want to get your thoughts.
AY: So obviously Haesan and Mallacaland are the teams to beat here, but a lot will depend on the Ibrahim Kamza situation. If he's out, who knows?
ME: That's very much the case, and I really like Lao Sansong as a potential spoiler here if Kamza can't compete. There's a lot of venom on this team, and there's a lot to play for considering the current, um, situation between Haesan and Sansong.
ZZ: I wouldn't be so sure of that... I think this Mallacaland team is surprisingly deep. Kamza is definitely their heartbeat, but they're too talented and this group just isn't strong enough to pose a real threat of eliminating them at this stage.
HY: What matchup here are you looking forward to the most?
ME: Give me Haesan vs. Lao Sansong in Suyang! Final game of the group, absolute hatred, and a surely roiling environment. Even if Haesan ends up mercying the Warriors, the passion alone makes this one must watch.
ZZ: I'm more interested in the premiere: Mallacaland v. Haesan. This is by far the toughest test Haesan will get in the group stage, Kamza or no. We'll get to see how their new coach, and new philosophy, holds up against a top team in the IDU.
AY: I agree with Zhuang, for all the reasons he stated, and also just because of the atmosphere. Haesan will pulling out all the stops for the tournament opener.
HY: Alright, so what are your predictions for this group?
ME: Haesan, Lao Sansong, Mallacaland, Elalia. Kamza can't make it and the Lions fall apart.
ZZ: Whoa, that's bold! I'll keep it chalk. Haesan, Mallacaland, Elalia, Lao Sansong.
AY: I wouldn't discount Sansong that much, Elalia doesn't have a ton going for it. Haesan, Mallacaland, Lao Sansong, Elalia for me.
HY: It looks like we're getting Group B in now! Let's take a look:

Group B - Sinju/Hyangsan
Libertas Omnium Maximus
Laeral
Teyè
Thousand Branches

HY: Thoughts?
AY: This isn't quite a dream for Laeral, but they'll find a lot of comfort in Group B. They'll get two games in Sinju, and there's a large Ren and Minjian presence there. I expect those two, including a tantalizing fixture against LOM, will look a lot like home games for them.
ZZ: Indeed, but I honestly think this is close to a best case scenario for the Cranes. I'm quite pleased with this draw for them.
ME: I think this group rests on two questions: one, is Teyè dangerous? They're unproven, untested, didn't compete in Hanshui, and an absolute wildcard. That matchup could be a trap game for the loser of Laeral-LOM. The other question is: which version of LOM shows up? If the team that upset a lackluster Haesan in the Olympics arrives, they could make a really deep run. If they return to their usual mediocrity, or worse, as we saw in Trive, it's going to be a rough tournament to watch for fans of Madley's Mariners.
AY: I think that's a solid assessment.
HY: Ok, time for your guide to viewers. If you only have time for one Group B match, what should it be?
AY: Laeral vs. LOM. You have two prestige teams in a high profile head-to-head clash for control of the division, and more importantly, likely facing Mallacaland in the quarterfinals instead of Haesan. Your chance of making the finals drastically increases if your team wins as opposed to getting second.
ZZ: Agreed. Teyè doesn't intrigue me nearly as much as our Slokaisian friend here.
ME: It's not that I'm fascinated by Teyè, it's just I don't know what to make of it. Laeral-LOM is the definitive match to watch here.
HY: Predictions?
ME: LOM, Laeral, Teyè, Thousand Branches. Chalk for me.
AY: Agreed. The Branchians can't really upset anyone I don't think, and I don't trust Teyè. LOM seems the more complete team, so chalk for me as well.
ZZ: Laeral, LOM, Teyè, Thousand Branches. The Sharks always perform worse in the group stage than in knockouts.
AY: Laeral winning? From Zhuang? Of course.
HY: I hear they're ready to release Group C now!

Group C - Anfa/Levesque
Wosteaque
Aredoa
Misumi
Pharitaya

HY: First impressions?
ZZ: Misumi was always going to be the wrench in the system, they're clearly the "best of the rest" so to speak. Is Aredoa disciplined enough to withstand their fearsome pitching? It's going to be close.
ME: Honestly, Misumi might be the team to beat there? I feel like Aredoa is deeper for sure, but the Egrets are just always so well coached and disciplined.
AY: What about Wosteaque? Are we ready to anoint them here? They've got Norene and Draven, but outside of their stars, they could easily end up being number 3 on paper. This is the tightest group, even Pharitaya might have had chances against a different set of competitors.
ZZ: Exactly. If you pick any two of the top three teams to advance you'll have a reasonable justification for it.
HY: Ok, so this one's going to be tense. What do you think will be the highlight?
AY: So I'm going to take the easy answer and say Misumi vs. Aredoa on the final day. It's going to be cold, really cold, in Levesque, and with the wind off the lake too it could be just horrendous. This is the closest matchup we've seen across all the groups, and the slight favorites might have both a weather and crowd disadvantage; there are a lot of Mizu up in the Northlands too. Likely a "must-win to qualify" game, and Aredoa are going to get tested big time.
ZZ: No arguments. An instant classic in the making.
ME: Ok, for the sake of diversity, I'm going to say Wosteaque versus Aredoa. It's the opening game of the group, we all think Wosteaque is a bit of a paper tiger, and a loss here means the loser has got a high pressure game against Misumi to qualify. That threat alone makes this an enticing matchup, it's two excellent teams and a tie that will set the tone for the rest of the group's play.
AY: Agreed, this group will definitely be fun to watch!
HY: Alright, we're a bit overtime, let's get some fast predictions before we analyze the final group.
ZZ: Wosteaque, Aredoa, Misumi, Pharitaya
AY: Wosteaque, Misumi, Aredoa, Pharitaya
ME: Aredoa, Misumi, Wosteaque, Pharitaya
HY: Ok, we don't have time to process what Manuel just said, and we already know the final group, but here it is formally:

Group D - Anmi/Jeonyu
Trive
Slokais Islands
Mansilla
Eiria

HY: More chalk here, or what are we thinking?
ME: We have no clue how good over half these teams are. Trive is very highly rated for a team that has been at rest for 5 years, and the last time they played, their results were mediocre at best. Mansilla is making their international debut, and Eiria is just... overshadowed by their Caxcanan counterparts, to put it nicely.
AY: On paper, Trive is one of the most top-to-bottom solid rosters, Slokais is a marginal contender, and Mansilla has major bullpen issues, but on grass, how much really separates these teams? A lot I'd wager, but I'm not 100% sure.
ZZ: Slokais is such a mystery. They could easily be the best team in this group, or honestly, possibly the worst.
AY: Hard to make heads or tails of this one.
HY: What game do you think will help provide clarity?
AY: Well, the opener, Slokais v. Trive will provide a lot of info. We'll see how shaky Slokais is, if Trive is ready for the bright lights again, and it'll generally help clarify who is on top of the group.
ME: Hard to disagree with that.
ZZ: Honestly, I don't think the Blue Bombers have much of a chance against Trive. I think Slokais vs. Mansilla will resolve this one. Slokais has the deeper bullpen for sure, Mansilla will need to keep their starter on for a while, but I just don't trust their lineup. This one will be closer than many expect.
HY: OK, final predictions before we talk about knockout projections?
ME: Slokais, Trive, Mansilla, Eiria. I can't root against my team.
AY: Haha, at least you're honest about it unlike Zhuang over here. I've got chalk here: Trive, Slokais, Mansilla, Eiria.
ZZ: What's that supposed to mean? Anyways, I'm taking an upset by the Scudieri: Trive, Mansilla, Slokais, Eiria.

HY: Alright, before we go, I want to see who you're picking to win it all! So, given your group stage results, who do you think is going to advance? Alexandra, let's start with you.
AY: Ok, I'll take Haesan over Laeral, Mallacaland over LOM, Wosteaque over Slokais, and Trive over Misumi in the quarters. Let's say Haesan over Trive in the finals, a battle of the hosts.
ZZ: Haha, and you say I'm the partisan?
AY: Hey, the Comets are favored to win, after all! And they're at home!
HY: Zhisheng, what about your picks then?
ZZ: LOM v. Wosteaque, and Laeral v. Aredoa are my semis. I have Wosteaque over Laeral in the finals.
ME: Haha, so he's not a perfectly loyal fan after all! Well played Zhuang, well played.
ZZ: What can I say, I'm nothing but tactful!
HY: Alright, and Manuel, you can wrap this up with your picks!
ME: OK, so Haesan over Laeral, and LOM over Lao Sansong shouldn't be too controversial. I'll also say Slokais over Misumi and Aredoa over Trive. Haesan over Aredoa and LOM over Slokais seem pretty common sensical, and let's say the hosts get revenge for the Olympics in the final. Haesan over LOM.
HY: Alright, that concludes our coverage of the IDU Baseball Classic draw! We look forward to covering the action in February! In the meantime, feel free to check out our website for more in-depth information on when and where the games will be, as well as information about the host cities! This has been Henry Yeong, with Alexandra Yoo, Zhuang Zhisheng, and Manuel Enriquez, signing off.

Welcome to the planning thread for the 2023 IDU Baseball Classic in Haesan! This competition is open to all of the nations of the IDU and seeks to revive a long forgotten event and celebrate both baseball and national cultures across the region.

You can access the registration form here. To enter, post the link to the completed form in the thread below, and be sure to make the settings "anyone with the link can view" so we can see it.
The registration deadline is August 1st August 15th until we reach 16 teams. Please try to submit your form (or at least let me know your interest) as soon as possible so I can get started on the calculations and logistics phase of this in a timely manner.

How does this tournament work?
Functionally, it depends on the number of teams, but there will be a group stage with a semi-randomized draw and locations (think: World Cup) followed by a single-elimination bracket. There may be play-in games between the first few teams held before the tournament if the numbers are awkward (i.e. prime). The games will be simulated largely by hand (with the aid of a computer program) using some customized formulas. This will take a while to run, and the event will likely take place sometime in the fall.

Outcomes of individual at bats will be randomized but affected by the player ratings of the batter and pitchers. These are assigned in the registration form, and the average must be no more than the program rating. The program rating is determined by how good your nation is at baseball, and is a combination of factors:
1. Your nation's Olympic baseball rating (35%)
2. Your nation's Olympic softball rating (15%)
3. A mix of cultural factors including Olympic success in Hanshui, a history of competing at the Trive Baseball Classic, and a cultural legacy of baseball (as measured in wiki references to the sport and general impressions) (50%)
This average then went through some math (standardization and then redistribution to fit a new mean and sd that made the numbers look like a realistic spread) in order to get the program score, which ultimately falls in a range from 27 to 78. The full list is below at the bottom of this post.

The reason why I did this is mainly for realism. Since we just had a competition with baseball a few months before this occurs, it would be totally unrealistic to see drastic changes in who has good/well funded programs. Of course, if your nation competes here and overperforms, their score will likely improve in the future. Just like real life, some nations will only be happy with a win, while others are ecstatic to make it out of the group stage at all. I also wanted there to be some element of strategy in assigning points, versus the old league simulator version where it is basically just fancy coin flips. Additionally, this way you can customize your team to be what you want, whether that is a single superstar-led roster, or one that is more well balanced. The choice is yours.

In addition, similar to Trive, you can increase your program rating by up to 10 points by providing additional details about your team and players.

How do I fill out the form (accurately)?
First is the administration section, where you provide information about your team. There are only two required items:
1. Your country name
2. Your trigram

There are also 4 optional items that will boost your program rating, with IC reasons for doing so:
1. Your team nickname (+1)
Having a rallying cry will give your players something extra to fight for.
2. Your team mascot (+1)
A comedic (or adorable) character to represent your team gives makes your players a bit more relaxed on the field.
3. Team uniform description (both home and away, please) (+1)
Nice clothes beget confidence.
4. Cheerleading squad (4 cheerleaders + MC) (+2)
In Haesan, it is routine for teams to have cheer squads at games, and the infrastructure will remain available for national teams to use during the baseball classic. Having a cheer team leading chants during at bats is a major psychological advantage. This is the aspect that makes this a uniquely Haesanite competition with our own national flair; it's not every day you see stadiums full of people on their feet chanting for a batter to hit a home run.
5*. You can also provide any additional notes about your team for flavor I can use in narrating this tournament. You don't get points for it, but it can make this event more fun for RP purposes and doubly so for teams that aren't predicted to do so well.

Then is the team roster, which has two mandatory components:
1. Player names (one at each position)
2. Player rating (a number from 0 to 100, higher = better player)
Put the team rating in the box that says Team Rating, and sum your modifiers and put it in the Bonus Applied box. The rest will auto calculate. Ensure your roster rating (gold box) is less than or equal to the adjusted rating (bottom silver box), or else your team will be subjected to a harsh investigation on suspicions of the use of controlled substances.

The bench is special here, instead of forcing you all to have to come up with one more name at each position (as in Trive), I have created a generic bench position. There may be substitutes for pinch hitters and pinch runners in key situations or to swap in if a player has been underperforming, and the substitutes' rating is represented by the bench. The bench rating represents multiple unnamed players, and as such its rating is counted three times when calculating the average. No player details should be provided for the bench, if I find that data is critical and I need it later, I will message you over discord when if that time comes.

There are also four optional categories here:
1. Batting order (+1)
This one isn't hard (you list the numbers 1-9) and basically I'm giving a free point for it, but I will have to manually set this if you don't, so please do it for me and get your free rating point. Having a set order helps provide clarity for the batters and gets them into a rhythm.
2. Player number (+1)
Helps provide clarity for coaches and players on the field. It's a nice bonus for your fans too. Please refrain from single digit numbers for pitchers or numbers larger than 60 unless absolutely necessary.
3. Handedness (left/right/switch) (+1)
Matching batters favorably against pitchers in terms of handedness provides them with an advantage at the plate (and vice-versa).
4. Baseball Club (+2)
Having a team and coaching staff to support and train you is a huge bonus to performance. Also, if you want to use any of the 32 teams in the Haesanite National League for some of your players, feel free. Just note that they have a 50% cap on foreign players, so don't send too many collectively to the same place.

National Rating List
If your nation did not compete in Hanshui and did not already tell me that you were interested in competing, let me know and I will get you rated.
In order of best to worst:
78 - Xiomera
77 - Haesan
69 - Great Tequila Island
67 - Milintica & Wosteaque
66 - LOM
10-hours to Quarter Finals

Tom Levi, though the center of an enormous scandal, The "sedate-gate," couldn't have felt any more relaxed as he walked into the Team's private gym. Tom was a very laid back guy to begin with. He wasn't as uptight and professional as Vanderbilt, nor was he authoritative or aggressive by nature, like Brookshire or Mueller. Tom Levi was a very laid back man indeed. It was, perhaps, his greatest strength. He was a brilliant player, not because of his raw talent, of which he did have copious amounts of, but because of his ability to take a huge step back and see the big picture. It gave him the ability to not get to drawn up in the heat of the moment.

He slowly took a seat one of the gym's treadmills, methodically took off his bedroom slippers, and put on his running shoes. No need to go to hard today, he thought to himself, The risk of pulling a muscle outweighs the possibility of a strategic advantage on the pitch. He set his watch for 45 minutes, hoped up onto the treadmill, began to jog lightly, and slowly fell into the methodical rhythm of putting one foot in front of the other. The was no real reason he had to bore himself by thinking of nothing so he let his mind slowly wander.

His first instinct, as he was only hours away from the match of his career, was to take a nice morning stroll down memory lane. He had always been a nostalgic man. It seemed that he was becoming more and more sentimental by the hour. He had even brought his first pair of cleats for good luck. He had dragged them all over the world just for their sentimental value.

Just as simply as it came, his sentimental wonderings vanished and he increased his pace one step. Was I sedated in order to give my opponents an advantage he asked himself. More importantly, by whom?

Levi was a smart man, it hadn't taken him long to figure out that this had to have been an inside job. It couldn't have been a fellow player. He was at bare minimum certain of that. No player, even a reserve, would have had the opportunity to drug the drinks. He also figured out that the person who was behind the event didn't know all too much about the inter-workings of the team since it seems that they only drugged the largest cooler.

There was a team superstition that only Darkas and Levi didn't follow: "Never drink out of the 5 gallon cooler." It was, in Tom's opinion, the stupidest thing he had heard of so he ignored it. He happily filled his bottle up from it every time. If the perpetrator knew the team, he would have known not to drug the % gallon cooler but instead drug the 3 gallon ones. This meant that he could rule out Alfonsi and Berkley, they had been with the team since 2018. They knew all about the superstition.

This actually narrowed the search down to about 10 people. Levi was about to step of the treadmill to explain his findings to Alfonsi when an idea came into his head. Suppose I conduct my own investigation. People will have a far looser tongue with me than with Coach.

In the most elevated state of contentment, Levi let his mind wander onto the game ahead.

Welcome aboard the Trive-IDU Baseball Classic Friendlies presented by Roasters, quality Trivian coffee at your doorstep.
This annual competition will determine the best baseball team in the IDU, while hopefully furthering the popularity of the sport in the region.

RP Notes:
The Trivian Premier League of Baseball, along with the Trivian Ministry for Sports, will reimburse transit and housing costs for all athletes. Ticket sales are allocated through a free-for-all system, with 10% of seats reserved for Trivians.

We'll start with a series of friendly games between the first 4 teams to enroll:
All games shall be held in the Pine Tree Stadium @ Petropavlovskiy-Kamchatsky.

10:00 AM - Libertas Omnium Maximus (The Spear) v. Gardavasque (The Hopefuls)
6:00 PM - Trive (White Army) v. Zamastan (Whitecaps)

LOM's baseball team, "The Spear", is known for its superb batting and quick runners. Matches against this team will prove to be balanced.
In some opposition, the surprisingly solid team of Gardavasque, fittingly nicknamed "The Hopefuls", are a more defensive team, according to our scouts, who had some words in from the newly formed team. Gardavasque has no professional baseball league, but the team seems to be quite solid - its amateurishness has won some sympathy among the Trivians.
The Zamastan Whitecaps, judging by our scouting evaluation, seems to have a more balanced style of baseball, similarly to Trive's.
Nonetheless, these will be interesting series.
