How much of a horrible, wicked, twisted person am I that when I first read about this, I actually snorted?
I know, I know, that's nothing to laugh about, but it's just so... surreal. Death by sting ray.

I saw the obit in my paper. I was quite shocked. A guy who sticks his head in aliigators' mouths for a living getting killed by an animal that usually doesn't kill anyone? How weird! :pout:
Perhaps it was a government conspirecy. Maybe he's still alive, hanging out with Elvis, Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison.
I suppose it probably isn't very nice to laugh about this. It's not like he was Roanald Reagan. (Ooh, bad taste again) :unsure:

Oh, I liked him too. He was geeky, but also encouraged people to take an interest in animals and the environment ... and these days, getting people to take an interest in something other than drugs, sex, and money is difficult.
I think it is exactly how (not when) he'd like to go.
Now of course, it will be interesting to see what people do around sting rays for a short while. The Monterey Bay Aquarium either had some sting rays or devil rays ... and they are in a shallow pool designed for children to pet the rays!!!

I actually thought he was dead. I heard he died a few years back. It was sad then, and I suppose its sader this time becouse he actually is dead. But for some reason I can't rid myself of that feeling that I have done my mourning.

Yes, it is terrible that he died. It is terrible for his family.
But let me point out that Steve Irwin was at best tolerated by the vast majority of Australians. He also died doing his life's work. That saying about those who live by the sword springs to mind.

The oddest thing is, I hear that stingrays don't usuallly kill. It was only by the rare chance of him getting stung in the heart that he died.

Which was probably what elicited my "snort"-reaction... I mean... death by stingray. It's just so... it sounds like a joke. Not a tasteful one, mind you, but a joke nonetheless.

I hope that isn't the case (live by the sword, die by the sword), because that means I'm buying it during a flood event.
I had imagined that my death would come in a muddy hut on a world covered in a dense fog while trying to lecture an impetuous youth one last time before fading away to nothingness.:coffee:

Only 17 people have died from stingrays in the last 10 years, says Wikipedia.

I must say that I liked him. I have a tremendous capacity to like people who commit themselves to animal conservation and research - Marty Stouffer, David Attenborough, to name a few.
I'm sure his over the top style lead Aussies to worry that everyone would think they all were like him that but he was a committed guy who I bet was a good friend. When I saw the show when his dog died I was quite moved by his actions.
May he live in the memories of those whose lives he touched the most.
