They all look lovely!!!

I haven't done anything with the NSWiki, because every time I try it's fubar. But these look perfect. Love the Naval ranks.

Yes, it's not NS Wiki but NS Wonky. Still, while I've got the creative juice flowing and the time, I'll post a few more while i have time and momentum.

I decided the Chaplaincy and RAMC were Forces-wide organisations (makes sense, otherwise the naval and air chaplains have their own dept., flight surgeons, etc.). So:

Forces Caps

T to B: RAMC physician (Aesklepion) dress, RAMC surgeon (stripped barber pole) field, RAMC veteranarian (horse) field, RAMC nurse (use this cap as a badge for other headgear) ward, RAMC orderly (stretcher) field&ward.

Not shown: Chaplaincy officers and ORs wear uniforms of arm of service to which they are attached, cap badge naturally a Christian cross for both RC and Protestant chaplains, Star of David for the Jewish chaplain and a tree for the Pagan chaplains.

Republican Air Force SECOND DRAFT

The Lloegr-Cymru Republican Air Force or RAF is the smallest and newest service of the Lloegr-Cymru Forces. Two air forces, the Fleet Air Arm and The Aviation Regiment, exist outside the Air Force.

Command
The Air Board is responsible for the political direction of the RAF, consisting of three voting members: the parliamentary political Secretary of State for Defence (currently Simon Gwylyms), the civil service non-partisan Permanent Under Secretary, and the Forces Chief of the Air Service and First Air Member. The Second Air Member (Air Operations) and Third Air Member (Air Support) cannot vote by their Forces? superior relies on their advice in discussions with government authorities.

The Air Marshal is the senior Air Officer in the RAF, who holds concurrent appointments as CAS, First Air Member and Commander Gwyneth District. Below the CDS is the Chief of Air Operations and Second Air Member, with three Squadrons Commanders as subordinates charged with fighter, bomber and transport operations. The Chief of Air Support and Third Air Member also has three SC subordinates, charged with aircraft, supply and training responsibilities.

English is both the official and working language of this arm of service mainly because it is a new and technologically oriented arm of service Forces. Consequently, Welsh is rarely encountered in official names and documents.

As the regiment is the basic building block of the Army, so to the squadron is of the Air Force. Squadrons are have about twelve aircraft depending on the role and fulltime or parttime status. The air officer commanding, not surprisingly, is a Squadron Commander and the two or more flights' AOCs are Flight Lieutenants.

Although squadrons bear numbers rather than official alphabetic names, many have widely known nicknames, e.g., No. 21 Fighter Squadron "Guineas" (for the 21 shillings in an old guinea), No. 50 Heavy Bomber Squadron ?Omlettes? (for the broken ?eggs? or bombs) and No. 76 Transport Squadron "Storks" (for delivering welcome gifts).

The Air Force's squadron traditions are as strong if not as long as the Army's regimental traditions. The heraldic badges of the RAF consist of ovals crowned by an iris (the national flower), flanked by laurel wreaths and supporting a scroll bearing the motto. The field of the badge includes a graphical allusion to the squadron's history, role, location or achievements, frequently incorporating birds.

Higher formations
Two or more squadrons may be grouped temporarily or semi-permanently into a numbered wing under the command of a Wing Commander. Currently No. 1 Wing at RAF Aberystwyth is tasked with air defence of the capital, No. 3 Wing RAF Caerdydd training and No. 6 Wing RAF Caernarfon multi-role. These are analogous the Army brigades or Republican Navy squadrons, and consequently have little personality or sense of continuity.

In contrast, Republican Air stations by definition are static. The RAF?s three major stations are commanded by Squadron Commanders. Headquarters RAF is located at RAF Caernarfon and its Air Marshal is concurrently Commander Gwyneth District for home defence in the island-province. The second major station is at RAF Aberystwyth and is responsible for the air defence of the capital. The third major station is at RAF Caerdydd.

Minor stations are little more than forward airfields with minimal base services and defence. These five stations are each commanded a Flight Lieutenant:
#RAF Abertawe
#RAF Ceredigion's second city
#RAF Gwyneth's second city
#RAF Llandrindod
#RAF Llangefni.

Aircraft
Gwyneth is the nation's industrial heartland and arms manufacturing centre, which is why HQ RAF is found there. Civilian companies like Lloegr-Cymru Aerospace, Hebocawr-Sidney, Eastland Helicopters and Essex produce a wide range of civil airplanes and helicopters for the home and foreign markets. When the Chief of the Air Staff identifies an operational need, the Air Board tenders a design, construction or maintenance contract. The four domestic aerospace companies usually bid on all contracts, but some bids are also received from companies elsewhere in the International Democratic Union under the IDU Free Trade Agreement.

The Air Force alphanumeric designation begins with one or two letters indicating its role: F for fighter, G for ground attack, B for bomber, T for transport, R for reconnaissance and S (school) for training. It is followed by a period, then a serial number within its letter group. The official nicknames, somewhat of an oxymoron, are always that of a bird. Additionally, many aircraft bear civilian designations for civilian domestic aircraft or foreign designations for export aircraft. A few have unofficial nicknames. Some of the more common aircraft are listed below with comments:

*B.1 Vulture ? Old but reliable medium bomber
*B.4 Albatross ? Strategic bomber noted by huge cost overruns
*F.1 Falcon ? Air defence interceptor
*F.2 "Cygnet ? naval variant of the Hummingbird operated by the Republican Navy's Fleet Air Arm
*FB. Goose ? Bomber variant of the F.1, named because it drops eggs and stays close to the ground
*FR.1 Gull ? Because gulls can spot edible garbage kilometres away. Unofficial nickname: "Gloomy Gus from a lisping pronunciation of FR.1 as "frown"
*G.1 Grouse or Grugiar ? Attack helicopter variant of T.2
*GF.5 Hummingbird ? vertical/short take off and landing fighter and ground support, so named because hummingbirds use stationary flight
*S.4 Chick ? Propeller-driven, elementary flight training
*T.2 Pelican ? Transport helicopter, so called because pelicans carry fish inside their bills rather than clamping on the outside the mouth.
*T.4 Flamingo ? Large transport aircraft named after T4 slips distributed annual by employers listing income for tax purposes and pink slips distributed the same employers to announce redundancies.

Markings
All combat and some non-combat aircraft are painted with camouflage appropriate to their location and role. Unarmed transports are usually painted plain white or, for VIP transport, light air force blue.

The fuselage bears a two-letter squadron code (consult chart above), the letters I, J, O, Q, U and V remaining unused to avoid confusion. The squadron code is followed by the Air Force roundel, blue and red annuli encapsulating a white circle with a stylised iris in the centre. Finally a single-letter code uniquely identifies each airplane in a squadron, and is often spoken as "x for y" on the models "A for Aberystwyth," "G for George," ?L for Lloegr? and "N for November." Combined it creates something like "BS * E" for No. 1 Squadron "Gweriniaeth" or "HU * H" for No. 55 Bomber Squadron "Flying Squirrels," where the asterisk represents the roundel.

On either side of the cockpit and in small letters is the rank abbreviation and name of the usual aircrew, often combined with the nickname or callsign. These are constructed on the model F/L F.X. "Lightfoot" Jones, S/L Bob "Mad Dog" Llewellyn and F/S D.G. "Junior" Lloyd.

LLOEGR-CYMRU FORCES new draft

Lloegr-Cymru has very small defence forces to preserve its national sovereignty and provide aid to the civil power. All three forces are collectively called the Lloegr-Cymru Forces.

The Forces' three arms of service are the Republican Navy (including the Republican Marines and Fleet Air Arm), the Army (including The Aviation Regiment), and the Republican Air Force (including The RAF Regiment). Separate government-dominated boards and service staffs oversee each service.

Command
As German military theorist Major General [[wikipedia:Carl von Clausewitz|Carl von Clausewitz famously said, war is diplomacy conducted by other means. Thus overall civil direction of the armed forces is overseen by the joint civilian-military Defence Council. Its civilian political members include the Prime Minister (currently Geraint Llewelyn) and one or more of the Secretary of State for Defence (currently Simon Gwylyms), the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (currently Mary Gryffydd) and the Interior Minister (currently Sarah Monmouth). Each political minister is represented by a non-partisan civil service Permanent Undersecretary.

The highest ranking Forces officer and First Defence Member is the Chief of the Defence Staff, almost always an Admiral but sometimes a General or Air Marshal instead. The Second Defence Member and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff doubles (or rather triples!) as Chief of the Naval Staff. The third through seventh Defence Members hold concurrent command on the Defence Staff, and may be called in by their superiors to give advice or address the Defence Council but not vote.

The Third Defence Member and Chief of Combined Operations is a naval Captain or equivalent. The three principal subordinates are the Head of Amphibious Operations Commander or Major (RM or Army), Head of Airborne Operations Major (RM or Army) or Squadron Commander, and Head of Intelligence Commander or equivalent.

The Fourth Defence Member and Chief of Personnel is a naval Captain or equivalent with two principal subordinates. The Head of Social Welfare is a Commander or equivalent, with one naval Lieutenant and Sub-Lieutenant or equivalent in each District. The Head of Recruiting is a naval Lieutenant or equivalent, and has Sub-Lieutenants or equivalent in each District.

The Fifth Defence Member and Chief Comptroller is a naval Captain or equivalent assisted by a naval Commander or equivalent. Each District has a naval Lieutenant or equivalent as Comptroller and a Sub-Lieutenant or equivalent as Assistant Comptroller. Aberystwyth and Gwyneth each have an extra AC because of their special situations.

The Sixth and Seventh Defence Members head the Chaplaincy and Republican Army Medical Corps, both discussed separately below in their own sections.

Ranks
Because of the Forces' small size relative to the population and the republic's of bad experiences with civil war and peerage oppression, they have a rather flat hierarchy compared to many real world and roleplaying equivalents. And although English is the official language of government, ranks have semi-official parallel Welsh titles as well.

In peacetime there is one Admiral, General or Air Marshal in the Forces as a whole; four Admirals; one General; and one Air Marshal. The seven flag officers, general officers commanding and air officers commanding hold at least one and frequently several concurrent commands in each Service or the Forces generally.

Welsh naval ranks are defined in relationship to the concept of ships capten or captain for officers, and llongwr or sailors for ratings. English and Welsh air ranks model themselves on naval ranks for officers and army ranks for other ranks.

Personnel
Enlistment into the Forces is voluntary in peacetime, creating a small but professional defence forces capable of rapid expansion when prompted by wartime and then rapid contraction when peace is restored. The official period of enlistment is 20 years, but most of this is spent in the reserves. Each arm of service also maintains a parttime auxiliary, those of the navy called the RN Volunteer Reserve, the army the Territorial Army and the air force the RAF Volunteer Reserve.

All ranks are motivated by patriotism and the desire to serve their country, but the officers and other ranks have their own separate motivators. Most military trades have civilian applications, e.g., Navy stevedores work in ports and officers can pilot merchant ships; Air Force air crew can maintain aircraft and pilots fly aircraft; and Army engineers can construct buildings and medical professionals can work in hospitals. Only in the sharp trades ? naval weapons, rifle and artillery, and air weapons ? not unexpectedly have limited civilian application, but even those veteran can work in the private security or physical fitness fields.

Junior officers -- Sub-Lieutenant and Lieutenant or equivalent ? typically spend ten years on active service, retiring in their early thirties. Senior officers ? Commander, Captain (Navy) or equivalent -- typically serve their entire enlistment on active service. Finally, those in the highest ranks -- Admirals, General or Air Marshals -- are often appointed after their 20 years is up and serve at the pleasure of the Defence Council.

Officers enjoy high social status, and the small size of the professional Forces gives them cachet as an exotic. On the practical size, experience commanding subordinates and directing large organisations is easily applied to their civilian career once their military career is over.

Other ranks are most often motivated by a desire to leave the boredom of the countryside or the anomie of the cities, and of course for a job. In fact, joining the Forces is known as taking the Republic's swllt or shilling. Somebody motivated purely by money is disparagingly called an arian.garwr or mercenary, even though they do not meet the technical definition since they are citizens of the country in whose armed forces they serve.

Districts
Each island-province plus the capital city have a senior officer holding concurrent appointment as commander of the static troops in the Forces district. Aberystwyth District, as befits the national capital, is commanded by the CDS personally. The district?s static troops are LCS ??Aberystwyth?? (including B Company Republican Marines) under a naval Captain, RAF Aberystwyth (including A Company The RAF Regiment) and the largely ceremonial Presidential Brigade.

Abertawe District, a unitary city-province-island jurisdiction, is commanded by the Admiral concurrently Flag Officer Fleet Air Arm and Flag Officer LCS ??Abertawe??, the latter of which includes C Company RM. The air force?s forward operating airfield is RAF Abertawe and under the command of a Flight Lieutenant. Voluntary reserve forces are LCS ??Anchors?? RNVR and The Abertawe Regiment (Territorial Army).

Caerdydd District is a unitary city-province-island jurisdiction devoted to training of all three services. It is under command of the Admiral concurrently Flag Officer Shore at LCS ???Caerdydd??? (including D and G (Trg) Companies RM). The junior service has bases at Camp Caerdydd (Army) and RAF Caerdydd (including B Company The RAF Regiment) under a Squadron Commander. Local forces consist of LCS ??Aye?? (RNVR), The Caerdydd Regiment (TA) and No. 93 Squadron (RAFVR).

Ceredigion District is commanded by the Admiral concurrently Chief of the Naval Staff located at LCS ??Ceredigion's second city?? and whose base defence is provided by F Company RM. The other Regular bases are rounded out by Camp ??? in Ceredigion's third city and RAF Ceredigion's second city (including B Squadron The RAF Regiment). Voluntary Reserve forces are LCS ??Ready?? (RNVR), The Ceredigion Regiment (TA) and No. 90 Squadron (RAFVR).

Gwyneth District?s commander is concurrently the Air Marshal serving as Chief of the Air Staff at RAF Caernarfon (including C Coy The RAF Regiment). Besides the minor base at RAF Gwyneth's second city, there are home defence forces amounting to LCS ??Able?? (RNVR), The Gwyneth Regiment (TA) and No. 91 Squadron (RAFVR).

Powys District, a pastoral island-province, is commanded by the General concurrently Chief of the General Staff at Camp Llandrindod (Army), whose only other Regular base is a forward airfield at RAF Llandrindod under a Flight Lieutenant. Volunteer forces consist of LCS ??Aweigh?? (RNVR) and The Powys Regiment (TA).

Ynys M?n Distict, whose area is largely covered by national parks, is headed by an Army Colonel concurrently Commanding Officer 4th Brigade (Infantry) and Camp Llangefni. The forward airfield, commanded by a Flight Lieutenant, is located at
RAF Llangefni. Home defence is the responsibility of LCS ??Willing?? (RNVR) and The Ynys Mon Regiment (TA).

Chaplaincy
Although it is very small compared to the other branches of service, the importance of the Army Chaplaincy in what is officially called the Holy and Serene Republic cannot be denied. Religion, and specifically the Roman Catholic religion, was the raison d'?tre of Lloegr-Cymru. Indeed, freedom of worship for non-conformist religious was not granted until 1902 and Catholic bishops are still ex officio members of the House of Peers. Each battalion or similar unit has a priest appointed to oversee the spiritual welfare of the soldiers and inspire them to kill on command. The Chaplain General is jointly appointed Simon Gwylyms, Secretary of State for Defence, and Archbishop Rhys ap Llew, Spirituality Minister.

The Chief of Chaplaincy, naval Captain or equivalent, is concurrently Sixth Defence Member. He ? and for reasons which become clear, always a he ? and his naval Commander or equivalent deputy concern themselves with the spiritual welfare of all those serving in the Forces. For this purpose, the Chaplain General directs about 70 priests and ministers of religion at various districts, bases, units and formations. Chaplains wear the uniforms of the troops to which they minister, or of whatever arm of service they prefer if they are attached to a unit or base consisting of two or more arms of service.

Since 1972, as part of a policy to reach out to non-Catholics, the Chaplaincy has three Non-Conformist branches located at the Forces level: the Protestant Chaplaincy (a naval Lieutenant and two Sub-Lieutenants or equivalent, plus the padre of 2nd Battalion The Lloegr Fowlers and LCS ??Abertawe??); the Jewish Chaplaincy (one rabbi as a Sub-Lieutenant or equivalent); and the Other Chaplaincy (Sub-Lieutenant or equivalent). Additionally, the Outreach Chaplaincy under a Sub-Lieutenant or equivalent ministers to atheists, agnostics, undeclared and other non-believers.

The Head Chaplain of the Navy, a Commander, is responsible for about
17 priests:
*LCS ??Abertawe??: Lieutenant and two Sub-Lieutenants (plus one Protestant)
*LCS ??Aberystwyth??: Sub-Lieutenant
*LCS ??Caerdydd??: Lieutenant and two Sub-Lieutenants
*The seven or so destroyers and carriers: Sub-Lieutenant each as ship?s Padre
*LCS ??Ceredigion's second city??: Lieutenant and two Sub-Lieutenants.

The Head Chaplain of the Army is a Major responsible for 26 priests. Every full-sized Regular battalion gets a Lieutenant as Padre who moves with the unit, plus each of the four brigade bases gets a Captain as a static Padre. The chaplain of 2nd Battalion The Loegr Fowlers is a Protestant.

The Head Chaplain of the Republican Air Force is a Squadron Commander. All of the chaplains are based at RAF stations: a Flight Lieutenant, one Pilot Officer (plus one Protestant) at RAF Aberystwyth; one Pilot Officer at RAF Ceredigion's second city; a Flight Lieutenant and two Pilot Officers (plus one Protestant) at RAF Caernarfon; and a Flight Lieutenant two Pilot Officers (plus one Protestant) at RAF Caerdydd.

Health services
A Colonel serves concurrently as Seventh Defence Member, Chief of Health Service and Commander Republican Army Medical Corps. For political reasons, the office is not known as Surgeon General as it is in many RL and RP armed forces.

As its name implies, the RAMC used to be the health branch for the Army only. However, as the need grew, it took over the responsibilities for the entire Forces while retaining its historic name. The Republican Army Medical Corps has several components divided by training and professional governing body:
#Cynorthwywr meddygol milwrol (Military Orderlies), whose badge is stretcher
#Deintyddion milwrol (Military Dentists), whose badge is a tooth
#Ffisigwyr milwrol (Military Physicians), whose badge is an Asklepian
#Gweinyddesau milwrol (Military Nurses), whose badge and sometime cap is a white nurse?s hat
#Llawfeddygon milwrol (Military Surgeons), whose badge is a red-white-and-blue barber?s pole, dating from the medieval period when all trades of the knife had a single governing body
#Milfeddygon milwrol (Military Veterinarians), whose badge is a horse.

Lloegr-Cymru Forces - Sober Thought - 05-18-2006

Lloegr-Cymru Republican Air Force Markings:

Top: Subdued pattern roundel done in dark shades without any true colour. The call letters identify this as part of No. 21 Fighter Squadron "The Guineas" (a numismatic reference, not a racist one), specifically "M for Maddog" flown by Squadron Commander Bob "Mad Dog" Llewellyn.

Bottom: Normal pattern roundel done in blue, white and red annuli and a stylised purple iris in the centre. The call letters identify this as part of No. 1 Capital Squadron "Gweriniaeth", specifically "G for Gweriniaeth" flown by Flight Lieutenant F.X. "Lightfoot" Jones and normally used for transporting the President, Prime Minister or other high government officials.

** Added note for non-North American and non-psychologists: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual or "DSM" is used in NA to diagnose mental illness, so its use in this context was designed to add yet another (humourous?) layer into an already dense RP bit. ***
