Summary of what's happened so far:
Spoiler:
A mysterious man met Suleman Chaher on an Aelurian beach, discussing a plot. Chaher later has a secret meeting with First Minister Keitha Noguera of Aeluria. A few days later, he stages a coup against Prime Minister Laura Moore. President Leanna Walker is abroad and goes into exile in [nation]Laeral[/nation]. Keitha Noguera declares independence for Aeluria.
Chaher arrests Foreign Minister Josephine Alvarez, and Laura Moore tries to flee the country. Just before Moore can, Walker publicly announces she will not be supporting Chaher. Chaher then uses the factions of the military loyal to him to close the ports which prevents Moore from leaving.
Sonja, Alvarez's wife, becomes the leader of a resistance movement which is in touch with Moore, while Chaher arrests foreign nationals, notably from Laeral and Skoden. Someone attempts to assassinate Noguera, which seems to be people working for Chaher but they are really being framed by Walker, who intentionally planned for Noguera to survive.
Things that are going to happen soon:
Spoiler:
Various resistance factions will pop up, but Chaher will target Sonja's and try to find her and arrest all the members, while also focusing on finding Moore.
Walker will try and convince Noguera to join forces with her, using the 'fact' that Chaher wants her dead to unite them.
Chaher will start arresting more foreign nationals and also business leaders as he tries to transition back to communism. He will also continue trying to impeach Walker.
Josephine Alvarez will also have a part to play but that's a secret.
Long term:
We'll see.
If you want to participate:
Feel free to support any side, including recognising Aeluria's declaration of independence. Or publicly not recognising it, either is fine.
If you want Chaher to start antagonising you, just ask. Anyone who supports Moore or Walker will end up on his bad side, just be aware of that.
If you want to get involved militarily please let me know, and I'll tell you when violence is about to erupt.
Sanctaria is constitutionally neutral but is a member of what is known in the IDU-RP world as a member of the G-5 (it's like the real word G6/7); Laeral, Sciongrad, Bears Armed, and Grosseschnauzers are the other members. As such it's considered one of the more influential nations in the region.
Because of that, Sanctaria won't ever have covert missions or send military aid, but can in the event of civil war, be appealed to to provide "blue helmets", which are peacekeepers, as well as humanitarian aid. In the past, Sanctaria has also been chosen as the neutral arbiter/mediator in disputes, as well as being the host for peace conferences, because it is the only member of the G5 that is neutral.
Also, FYI, just because we're neutral doesn't mean we have significant armed forces - we do.
Just info for Lauchenoiria and/or other members of the RP wondering where to include Sanctaria.
Short notes on Gnejs and it's participation (as far as I've thought about it):
The initial Gnejsian recognition of Aelurian independence was obviously an accident, the foreign minister being slightly senile and all.
My next installment is a government meeting, preceded by a meeting of the prime minister and some of his closest ministers and advisers. They'll be talking about how to deal with foreign minister Hellvik's letter, and the fact that he included a "Rock of Friendship" (which is a big thing in Gnejs; no country/state has been offered this in the last 70 years or so, the last one being Domonia, our closest neighbor). Based on their meeting, the government will eventually reach a decision on the Union's official stance.
Also, while Gnejs doesn't have a very substantial diplomatic corps, it does have a sizable Directorate for Special Logistics, answering to the Home Office and the Prime Minister. We've got spies, basically, and they might come into play.
Laeral's diplomats and government officials have something of an inferiority complex about Laeral's place in the world. This is partially due to Laeral's history of being a colony, as well as Laeral's period as a poor and unimportant nation, lasting up until the economic boom in the 1980s. Upon being elected President in 2010, Nicholas Brennan announced that Laeral would pursue a greater role in the world. Aspects of this include an aggressive expansion of the Foreign Service (Laeralian diplomats working abroad), the bid for Laeral's representative to serve as Delegate to the WA, and the recent intervention in the Northeastern Sea. This has led to pushback recently, particularly the Northeastern Sea Crisis, which opposition politicians criticized. Laeral's presidential elections and elections to the National Assembly will take place in late summer, and President Brennan knows that the public doesn't have an appetite for extensive intervention in Lauchenoiria, unless there is an excellent excuse for it.
Nicholas Brennan's government largely feels that intervention in Lauchenoiria is necessary. The governing coalition consists of the Progressives, Conservatives, and Socialists, in that order of importance. The Progressives are largely in favor of diplomatic or military intervention given their support of intervention abroad to promote democracy and human rights (as well as some Progressive leaders understanding that Laura Moore is likely more friendly to Laeralian interests than Suleman Chaher). The Conservatives are generally in favor of intervention, especially given the communist rhetoric spouted by Chaher. The Socialists, however, are opposed, seeing this as an unnecessary and bloody foreign misadventure (and, although they refuse to admit it, it's possible that some of their higher-ups may have sympathies for Chaher's communist ideology).
The Supreme Leader of Gonhog feels that another authoritarian military power in the IDU would work well for them, especially if said authoritarian state is indebted to them, so they will send military aid and several brigades to support.
On the other side, the SIC knows that Gonhog is superior militarily and having an ally at Gonhog's side is no bueno. Therefore, they will send military advisors and equipment to resistance groups, while also offering safe haven and support for former government issues.
President Victoria Clefton of Christos has issued a statement on the coup happening in Aeluria :
"It is sad to hear what is happening on the island of Aeluria in the nation of Lauchenoiria. As of right now Christos takes no stance in this coup but does condemn the force used by Chaher. We will be watching the situation closely and respond accordingly. My hope is that the people of the island of Aeluria that are loyal to Lauchenoiria are treated well and Christos is willing to provide aid when needed. My hope is that this conflict ends peacefully and that innocent civilians are not mercilessly killed because of this coup."
I will post Matéo and Leonie's meeting on Sunday when I have access to a computer, as I am also on holiday. It's really fiddly doing long posts on my phone, and the heat here is legitimately twice as high as the normal summer temperature in my own RL country so I am not functioning at peak capacity.
So, what does Lauchenoiria's military look like? I'm not planning an invasion, for several reasons:
1. Laeral's army (officially known as the Laeralian National Security Force following an attempted coup in the 50s) would probably find it difficult to win against Lauchenoiria, Gonhog, and Kerlile,
2. A military intervention of that size would require a vote in favor from the National Assembly, which Brennan isn't sure he can win,
3. The national elections for President, the National Assembly, and many provincial offices are soon, and Brennan doesn't want to damage his Progressive Party's support.
However, I would like a general summary of the Lauchenoirian military's strength and how loyal it is to Chaher.
Lauchenoiria's military is not particularly large, as the previous few governments have been pretty pacifist. When Chaher grabbed power, he diverted a lot of funding to the military, but in such a short timescale that won't have done much. Hence why he's relying on foreign assistance despite his xenophobic tendencies. Most military personnel haven't seen much active duty apart from the navy fighting pirates and some of the older generation taking part in the Kerlian civil war.
The majority of the military, especially those in high ranks, will be loyal to Chaher, especially after the extra funding and the impeachment vote. In any conflict, there would be sabotage from within the ranks from anti-Chaher individuals, but expect 90% of the military to be for Chaher. He will have culled anyone high ranking that he thinks would betray him by this point.
Technologically, the military is about average with other nations, as research was funded even throughout the pacifist governments. Lauchenoiria has no nuclear weapons or any kind of WMDs. The first Communist administration began a nuclear program but it was dismantled before it got anywhere. The previous governments have relied on diplomacy rather than strength.
Kerlile, my puppet and Chaher's ally, on the other hand, has a large military. Kerlile is a matriarchal dictatorship, where men are treated in some respects like women were in the late 19th/early 20th century irl. They had a massive civil war in the 90s as pro-democracy and equality elements tried to overthrow the government. The pro-democracy side lost the war, and the government clamped down even more. However, if Chaher betrays them even slightly, they will turn on him in an instant, and he doesn't plan to give them everything he's promised.
Henderson Long was not in Laurel for travel he was there to kill. Henderson had Was a Lauchenoirian Man who has seen to much of the propaganda filled News. He Believed that Chaher was the son of God. And When he learned about Nicholas Brennan and his actions he was angry so Angry that he went to Slokais to gear up to Kill Brennan. He had then obtained a Nc 84 Machine Gun at a Arms Dealer then crossed in to Laurel by boat. Now he was in a hotel gearing up with some Friends for the atack.
A note on Lauchenoirian and Kerlian naming customs, so as to reduce any confusion:
Lauchenoirians generally use either the common paternal surname, or Spanish naming customs, depending upon their ancestry. So Leanna Walker is the daughter of Grant Walker, and Leanna Walker is her full name. Josephine Alvarez is the daughter of Raymundo Alvarez Ortega and Clarissa Gallego Mártez and her full name is Josephine Alvarez Gallego.
In Kerlile, husbands take their wife's surname, and children have the maternal family name. So Joanna Greenwood is daughter of Wilma Greenwood. In Kerlile, lesbians have been allowed to marry (but not gay men) since 1992, and custom has developed of adding their wife's surname after their own. Sonja followed this custom and became Sonja Viratnen-Alvarez (taking only Josephine's first surname).
Lauchenoirians will often refer to both Josephine and Sonja using only 'Alvarez' (much to Sonja's annoyance), while Kerlians will usually refer to Sonja using 'Viratnen' as Kerlians do not recognise marriages to foreigners as legitimate.
All cities taken by Gonghog are given back to the governent, so you don't really need to say "Gonhogian Control." Also, I suggest renaming it from "Skodenian Control" to "Under Coalition Control".

To the Coalition and Resistance at war with Chaher's Lauchenoiria,
Sancti Imperii Catholico, although supporting the cause against the illegitimate communist governement, is pulling all funding and officers away from this war, per orders of the people and the Church. Instead, we will be sending humanitarian aid, along with the hospital ship SIC Sana to operate alongside the CDSP's own ship.
-NO NUKES. Or any other WMDs.
-Don't kill any character I've named without my explicit permission.
-Stay off Butterfly Island, for the time being.
- No genocide. Please.
Don't have any big battles in Buttercity until the end. Little resistance stuff like a small riot is cool but no actual military personnel outside of Chaher's own until the war is almost over.
Chaher has blocked off the city, the army is checking IDs of anyone who wants in or out, it will be exceptionally difficult to get in there, so unless you have people there already probably leave off the little attacks too.
I have just set up my soldiers to be in a place where they could potentially breakout Walker. If you want her to be dead or still imprisoned I can fix that easily. If you want my to break her out I can write the breakout or you can. It is up to you. If you want me to break her out, just tell me where she is being kept. Thanks for your consideration.
I don't want anyone to break her out, I already have a plan for how that storyline ends. I'll post it after the Battle of Summersea. Or before, if Summersea preparations keep taking so long.
I mean, it depends how much you want to get involved in the war. At the moment I'm very focused on Summersea and kind of leaving everything else until later, but I still have the Resistance stuck in Usera, and some people who want to bring Elopolis under resistance control. If you want, you can help the remains of the Ulinarian Provincial Government try and capture Elopolis, but you'd be very publicly backing a side if so.
