Passed: Repeal "end Slavery" - Antrium - 12-15-2007

Quote: Category: Repeal
Resolution: #6
Proposed by: Quintessence of Dust

Description: UN Resolution #6: End slavery (Category: Human Rights; Strength: Significant) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The United Nations,

Remaining fully opposed to slavery,

Hence disgusted that existing law on the subject, UN Resolution #6 "End Slavery", fails to live up its title and does not in fact end slavery,

Concerned that Resolution #6 makes no provision for:
- the prohibition of ownership of persons,
- the freeing of those previously enslaved,
- legal protection, economic aid and social rehabilitation for freed slaves,
- the prohibition of forced labour,
- the suppression of the slave trade,

Concluding that Resolution #6 is a woefully inadequate document that, given its prevention of any more meaningful legislation on the subject, is actively damaging to the international antislavery cause,

Stressing the importance of passing comprehensive antislavery resolutions immediately following passage of this repeal, which will:
- replace the prohibition of the sale of persons,
- fully address the above unaddressed issues,
- promote international cooperation to end the slave trade,

Repeals Resolution #6.
The original resolution is as follows:
Quote: Description: The scourge of slavery yet remains in these progressive times. People are bought and sold like cattle, unable to determine their destiny. Their families are split apart; they are allowed no possessions of their own. They are beaten, chained, and tortured.

Therefore, I propose that the following human rights be given to every peoples of this great world:

- The right to leave her or his job, given two weeks' notice.
- The right to own possessions.
- The right to travel freely throughout their country.
- The right to bodily safety from one's employer.
- The outlawing of the selling or purchasing of people.
I'll cast our vote on Tuesday night.

Whilst the original resolution is poorly written, the repeal won't do anything but allowing slavery until another resolution is at vote.

It is paramount for this repeal to be defeated for the sake of all nations.

Quote:  the repeal won't do anything but allowing slavery until another resolution is at vote.
But that is the conundrum. The original resolution did not actually disallow slavery in the first place ~ so technically slavery has been legal in all U.N. Nations all of this time. To introduce any new legislation, the original must be repealed as per game mechanics.

Domnonia would like to see solid, concrete laws and guidelines to address this issue.

We are FOR the repeal.

But the rights listed in the original resolution effectively prohibit 99% of slavery.

Passed: Repeal "end Slavery" - Dasri - 12-16-2007

No, it really doesn't. If someone was a slave when the original was passed, then they would in all likelihood remain a slave to this day. I also would point out that there are no limits on 'gifting' slaves, such as in bequests, birthday presents etc, and as such there isn't even a particularly effective bar on the trade of persons.

Passed: Repeal "end Slavery" - Federalist - 12-16-2007

I agree with Dom and Dasri. The orginal resolution does not actually outlaw slavery. The result of passing of the repeal would be the same as having the orginal resolution still on the books. As a result I am for repeal.

Passed: Repeal "end Slavery" - Bears Armed - 12-18-2007

I can't actually vote on the matter here, as my UN nation is in another region, but _

There's a good replacement already drafted, ready for submission as soon as this repeal goes through.

Passed: Repeal "end Slavery" - Antrium - 12-19-2007

FOR REPEAL [ 5 ] [83.33%]
AGAINST REPEAL [ 1 ] [16.67%]
ABSTAIN [ 0 ] [0.00%]

I will vote for the repeal, 5 to 1. (Good turnout Smile)

Passed: Repeal "end Slavery" - Gnejs - 12-19-2007

Gnejs is no longer a member of the UN, but we would however like to state our symbolic support for this repeal. The reasons have been stated by others, and that replacement looked promising when I glanced through it.. So, go repeal!
